Archbishop Timothy Dolan's appointment as the head of the Roman Catholic Church's New York Archdiocese became official today.
Pope Benedict XVI anointed and placed a pallium vestment on Dolan in a Vatican City ceremony.
The ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica marked the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, a national holiday in Italy.
Thousands of pilgrims from New York and Dolan's former home of Milwaukee made the trek to the Vatican to be in attendance.
